Summer Move-In at Green Door Apartments: Tips to Beat the Heat and Settle In Fast

July 22, 2026

Moving into a new apartment in summer is exciting — and sweaty. At Green Door Apartments in Belleville, IL, we see a lot of move-ins every June, and over the years our team has picked up practical tips for staying cool, getting settled fast, and avoiding the common summer move-in headaches. Here's what works.

Metro East summers can get muggy — Scott Lake at Scott AFB and Frank Holten State Recreation Area both have shade-friendly trails. Belleville and Shiloh both have community pool networks.

Move on the right day, at the right hour

If you have any choice in the matter, move on a weekday morning. Weekend traffic, weekend elevator/loading dock congestion, and weekend heat (which tends to peak around 3-5 PM) all stack against you. A weekday move-in after our leasing team opens (8 AM) is dramatically easier than a 1 PM Saturday move.

Hydrate before, during, and after

It's obvious advice that's almost universally ignored on moving day. Pack a small cooler with water, electrolyte drinks, and easy snacks like granola bars and fruit. Set it at the front door so anyone — you, friends, movers — can grab a drink without digging through boxes.

Unpack the bedroom first, kitchen second

Your future self will thank you. After a 12-hour move-in day, the only thing that matters is having a real bed to fall into and a way to make coffee in the morning. Everything else can wait a day.

Use the first 48 hours to do an apartment walkthrough

Test every outlet, every light switch, every faucet. Check that the AC, washer, and dryer all work. If anything's off, submit a maintenance request through the resident portal in the first few days — it's much easier to handle in the early weeks than later in the lease.

Get to know one neighbor in the first week

Even a quick "Hi, I'm new here, just moved in from across town" goes a long way. KH communities are designed to feel like communities, not just rentals.
